RADICAL DIMENSIONS IN GLASS MOSAIC

Dates:   Oct 2-3, 2010

Saturday and Sunday 10am - 4pm

RESUME

BIO

Course description:

This workshop invites students to see glass in a whole new way by introducing

them to three "extreme sport" variations of glass-on-glass mosaics:

Texture Field, in which multiple textures of clear and frosted architectural

glass are combined to create a dense, light-distorting field of visual texture;

Flat Stacking, in which stained glass is layered on top of  itself on a mirror substrate

for luminous light diffusion and a 3-D backgrount/foreground effect; and

Edge Stacking, in which clear, opaque, and translucent stained glass strips

of varying heights/lengths are stacked on edge either singly or packed together

so that the often beautifully striated riven edge is the visual focus.

Workshop is a combination of lecture/slideshow, demos, and lots of hands-on

practice.

Students will gain understanding and proficiency by creating a 12" x 12" mosaic

incorporating all three techniques, and will learn to use SpectraLock epoxy grout.

Additional topics covered will be designing for these techniques, efficient cutting

and setting tips, using mirror as a substrate, mixing these techniques with other

media, and appropriate adhesives, tools, and applications.

All supplies, tools and materials will be provided, but students are welcome to

supplement provided glass with glass from their own inventories.

This workshop will be of greatest benefit to mosaic artists who have worked in

glass and are looking for ways to "push the envelope" in how glass can be used

in mosaics.

*Ability to cut glass in straight lines with a straightedge is critical to getting the

most out of this workshop, and unfortunately there's just not time to teach it during

the workshop. A good understanding of basic mosaic principles and vocabulary

will also be helpful.

Payment/Registration

Payment is by check or credit card via PayPal. You must e-mail instructor at

kelley@rivenworksmosaics to get on the registration list and get full payment

13-7 days prior to class date will receive $150 tuition credit toward a future class.
