CLASSES & WORKSHOPS
FREE SUNDAY MOSAIC WORKSHOPS
In conjunction with the EARTH exhibition, 2cc and professional mosaic instructors Dawn Mendelson and Luz Mack-Durini will
launch a series of fun-filled and educational mosaic workshops open FREE to the public. The workshops will begin in April and
continue through August. They will be held on most Sundays from 10:00 am - 1 p.m. Please see schedule below. All ages
welcome. No experience necessary. Workshops will be conducted in English and Spanish and are set up so that anyone
can join in at ANY TIME. Participants will create both mosaic art pieces to take home and work on communal pieces for the
galley's wildlife garden.
Each month we will explore a environmental different topic, have a guest speaker or see a film and create a mosaic artwork.
Our final workshop on August 22nd will be a celebratory BBQ in the garden. At the end of summer, the 2,500 sq. ft area behind
the gallery will be transformed. We will utilize the knowledge we have gained about our native environment and select drought
resistant plants that attract wildlife. We will have a community planting. We will create an environment for wildlife to find
food, water, shelter and a place to nest. The communal mosaic artwork that has been created will be installed. The garden will
serve as a quiet place for the community relax and groups to gather. Every opportunity to come together is a potential to break
down barriers, gain understanding and build community.
For more information on our instructors, please visit their websites.
Please join us by registering for the free classes. Registration ensures that we have enough mosaic materials and healthy
snacks for everyone to enjoy. Please either call 562 901-0997 or email 2ndcitycouncil@earthlink.net. Please use the
subject line "Mosaic Workshops."

RADICAL DIMENSIONS IN GLASS MOSAIC
Level: Intermediate/Advanced*
Dates: Oct 2-3, 2010
Saturday and Sunday 10am - 4pm
Fee: $200 plus $50 materials fee
Course description:
This workshop invites students to see glass in a whole new way by introducing
them to three "extreme sport" variations of glass-on-glass mosaics:
Texture Field, in which multiple textures of clear and frosted architectural
glass are combined to create a dense, light-distorting field of visual texture;
Flat Stacking, in which stained glass is layered on top of itself on a mirror substrate
for luminous light diffusion and a 3-D backgrount/foreground effect; and
Edge Stacking, in which clear, opaque, and translucent stained glass strips
of varying heights/lengths are stacked on edge either singly or packed together
so that the often beautifully striated riven edge is the visual focus.
Workshop is a combination of lecture/slideshow, demos, and lots of hands-on
practice.
Students will gain understanding and proficiency by creating a 12" x 12" mosaic
incorporating all three techniques, and will learn to use SpectraLock epoxy grout.
Additional topics covered will be designing for these techniques, efficient cutting
and setting tips, using mirror as a substrate, mixing these techniques with other
media, and appropriate adhesives, tools, and applications.
All supplies, tools and materials will be provided, but students are welcome to
supplement provided glass with glass from their own inventories.
This workshop will be of greatest benefit to mosaic artists who have worked in
glass and are looking for ways to "push the envelope" in how glass can be used
in mosaics.
*Ability to cut glass in straight lines with a straightedge is critical to getting the
most out of this workshop, and unfortunately there's just not time to teach it during
the workshop. A good understanding of basic mosaic principles and vocabulary
will also be helpful.
