EARTH
Juror Mark Chamberlain
In 1973, Mark Chamberlain co-founded and still operates BC Space Gallery & Photographic Art Services.
For over 35 years, Mark Chamberlain has used photography and other art vehicles for social and political commentary. Artist,
author, educator, ardent environmentalist, and self-proclaimed arteologist, his work has brought widespread attention to
regional issues and global concerns. Most notable was The Tell, a collaborative non-profit public art project in Laguna Canyon in
1989. This 636-foot-long photographic mural, created with art partner Jerry Burchfield, served as the focal point and catalyst for
the defense of the canyon and ultimately drew thousands of people to the Laguna Canyon site, national attention to the issues,
and facilitated the public purchase of that land for preservation.
Other work includes Dubuque Passages, an intimate b/w documentary of Chamberlain’s hometown region created over a 10 year
period; Future Fossils, a similar endeavor in larger scale color incorporating images collected in California over another 25 year
plus period; and Looking for 2001, an ongoing companion color series of photographic images reflecting on our evolution into the
21st Century. Current activities include the long-term documentation of the El Toro Marine Base as it undergoes the transition
from military air base to regional park and an ongoing video & still documentation of the Mississippi River and its byways, and a
video history of the Artist Elders of Laguna Beach.
Along with an extensive exhibition record, Mark Chamberlain’s work is included in numerous public & private collections,
including the Laguna Art Museum, Orange County Museum of Art, the University of Dubuque, the Polaroid Collection, and the
Cincinnati Museum of Art.
BC exhibitions include the controversial & highly acclaimed Pretty Lies/Dirty Truth show, which addressed issues of war & peace
in our time; My Father’s Party is Busted!; Banned & Barred which dealt with the practice of censorship in art; Water Works,
addressing concerns of water use, misuse, and abuse; and Urbanscapes, a lyrical depiction of man’s impact and legacy on our
planet.

TWO EXHIBITIONS
The 2nd City Council Art Gallery + Performance Space (2cc) is pleased to announce its two latest exhibitions which celebrate the
100th anniversary of International Women’s Day. Both exhibitions run from February 19 – March 20, 2011. The first is a large
group exhibition juried by Idurre Alonso, MOLAA curator and features 28 contemporary female artists. The work includes
installations, neon, art on drywall, batik, painting, found object, drawing, photography, sculpture and mixed media. The art
addresses such topics as the human experience and human form, gender as non-binary, the power of women, belongings and
belonging, patterns and cultural implications as well as work that references literature. The free public artists’ reception is
Saturday, March 5th from 7 – 9p.m. and features live music, light refreshments and relaxing in the beautiful Sato Garden.
Wille’s Trapzoid, a smaller separate exhibition space within the gallery, features historical photographs and information on
inspirational women who have been involved in the visual, performing or literary arts in Long Beachover the past 100
years. Included are such women as Julia Morgan, the first woman to receive an engineering degree from Berkeley and the first
woman to receive an architectural degree from L‘Ecole de Beaux Arts in Paris. Julia Morgan has over 800 buildings to her credit
including the Hearst Castle and the 1925 Long Beach YWCA; sisters Georgiana Cuthbert (baritone horn) and Nina Cuthbert (alto
horn) who were part of Long Beach’s first band; Theda Bara silent film femme fatale who lived and filmed in Long Beach;
Cynthia Galles who co-founded The Found Theatre in Long Beach in 1974 and Kari Barba, master tattoo artist and owner of 4
shops including Outer Limits in Long Beach. The Trapzoid will also serve as an interviewing room for 2cc’s women artists oral
history project. Women artists are encouraged to take part in the interviews and are assured that the process is easy and painless
even for those who are somewhat uncomfortable being interviewed. To sign up, please email 2ndcitycouncil@earthlink.net

Statement:
The urban environment is commonly depicted as opposing nature and visa versa, but in actuality, the organic world is continuously
creeping into the vast networks of human planning and concrete. Similarly we, as artists, perpetually cross cultural borders and
challenge our society’s guarantee of a static and one-sided reality.
Our goal is to creatively explore, interpret, and transmit the seemingly contradictory webs of information, external events, and
internal developments that make up the ever evolving consciousness of our age. Original works representing and combining all
media will be presented in Long Beach in May and Los Angeles in June.

RECEPTION FEATURES THE MUSIC OF ECHO GREYWOLF
Echo's genre is Fingerstyle Guitar, and he is one of its masters. Echo Greywolf's talents are as rare as the harp guitar itself, for
few play an instrument that melds a six-string harp with a six-string guitar to create an amazing twelve-string wonder. Gibson
once produced them in the 1920s, but now this intriguing hybrid must be custom-made. As if that were not enough, Echo has
recently commissioned an entire string section in one instrument: It is a lyre-harp guitar. This astounding 24-string work of art
integrates a lyre, a harp and a guitar -- into one! It raises the musical bar to a height that only pole vaulters can go.
Imagine an instrumental dreamscape that transports you upon soaring, glittering arpeggios or that draws one into introspection
with somber yet tasty textures. A master craftsman melodist as well as a virtuoso player, Echo's original tunes are trinkets that
are to the ear what honey is to the tongue.
A virtual protege of venerable Alex Degrassi, Echo Greywolf's performance resonates with a musical worldliness honed and
burnished from diverse influences. Celtic, ragtime, classical, blues -- among others -- help sculpt distinct emotional and visual
portraits, from whimsical to melancholy to euphoric to romantic.

food, water, shelter and a place to nest. The communal mosaic artwork that has been created will be installed. The garden will
serve as a quiet place for the community relax and groups to gather. Every opportunity to come together is a potential to break
down barriers, gain understanding and build community.
For more information on our instructors, please visit their websites.

For Workshop Participants & Volunteers
The last five month have been an exciting time. Dawn Mendelson & Luz Mack-Durini, professional mosaic artists, lead Sunday
environmentally-themed mosaic workshops. To celebrate the participants, their creativity, family, friends old and new and the
building of community, a potluck BBQ will be held in the gallery's garden.
The gallery will provide the BBQ (including a vegetarian selection) and the drinks. If you feel "inclined" please bring a dish to
share but most importantly, please come. Please feel free to bring your family. We will unveil the communal pieces for the
garden and give a special thanks to our volunteers. We are working hard to be able to offer this free workshop series again next
year. The work that was created is beautiful and amazing stories have been told about the experiences participants had in the
garden creating art.
If you came with someone and registered on their behalf, we may not have their contact info so please, be sure to let them know
about the BBQ. We will be putting out any unfinished work so that you can pick it up and take it home. If the work is not picked
up by noon, then it will be available to anyone who wishes to "inherit" and finish it at home. So that we have enough goodies to
eat and drink, please RSVP by Wednesday, August 18th.
Thank you all for a wonderful series of art workshops.
The Wildlife Sanctuary and Art Garden will be unveiling in October 2010 as part of National Arts Month.

RECEPTION FEATURES THE MUSIC OF JESSIE DELUXE
Jessie Deluxe describes her sound as heavy, melodic rock. Her songwriting is dynamic and powerful featuring choruses that,
“lift you high in the air and then smash you back down to the ground.” This is in your face rock n’ roll that conjures up the
grittiness of P.J. Harvey and the sex appeal of Elvis, all the while adding her own unique edge.
This fiery front woman packs an authoritative punch live with her amazing voice. As she shreds on her Flying V, she
commands the audience with the conviction of a rock icon. It is no surprise, this L.A. based band has become well known for
high energy shows and electric performances.
As for her background, Jessie has garnered the attention of various producers such as David Rowntree (Blur), Dave Jerden
(Janes Addiction, Poe) and Geza X (Sonic Youth). Her influences range from, Hendrix, David Bowie, Annie Lennox, to NIN.

PROJECT KITCHEN FOR BELIZE - FUNDRAISER
After a CSULB sponsored trip to Belize Jessica was reminded of the simplicity of life and the true meaning of giving back. With
the support of her fellow students she started a fundraiser on behalf of a local village where they stayed. The women of the
Indian Church village work together in the local restaurant to accommodate the traveling tourists as well as the community
families. We want to positively impact this village by helping raise the $8,000 needed to replace and improve their current
kitchen, and I'm asking for your help in raising this money.
There are many ways to contribute to the cause.
PROJECT KITCHEN FOR BELIZE is currently seeking Sponsors (i.e. title, bar, entertainment and food), Donations (i.e. silent
auction items, food and wine contributions, and Monetary contributions) and Event Attendees to support this fundraiser. All
contributions will directly benefit reconstruction of Las Orquideas Restaurant’s kitchen to include smoke ventilation and
plumbing. Contributions are greatly appreciated!

The shelf-life of small, experimental theatres is remarkably short, but the always iconoclastic Found Theatre of Long Beach has
bucked another trend. Founded in 1974 by Long Beach resident Cynthia Galles and a group of friends from UCI, the Found
celebrates an unprecedented 35 years of providing the community with quality, cutting-edge theatre with a social conscious and a
sense of humor.
Celebratory events have been taking place throughout the year, including the 2nd Occasional Found Theatre Film Festival, which
highlighted filmed versions of such classic Found plays as "Cycle Sluts," and "Donner Party: The Musical!", as well as the upcoming
reprise of "Deadly Appliances," one of the most powerful and popular shows in the Found's vast canon of work.
To top off the anniversary year, The Found will host a huge 1940s-themed gala at the 2nd City Council Gallery & Performance
Space, located in the former site of the historic Wille's Tin Shop on Alamitos Ave. Featured entertainment will be the music of the
18-piece Long Beach big band "Hollywood Canteen," featuring vocalist Marcia Ford. Attendees can just sit and enjoy the
memorable music, enjoy a cocktail under the romantic lights of the beautiful Sato Garden, or dance the night away . There will
be a 1940s costume contest, a short swing dance lesson, swing dance competition, a raffle for exciting prizes, hors d'oeuvres, and
plenty of bubbly. In addition, the gallery will feature an exhibit of photographs and memorabilia from 35 years of Found Theatre
productions. Special guests will also be on hand.
The 35th Anniversary Gala will serve as a dual fundraiser for the Found Theatre and 2nd City Council Gallery which, like most arts
organizations, are struggling to stay afloat in the current economy. Tickets are just $30 per person, with all proceeds going to
support the programming of two of Long Beach's most respected arts organizations.

Art and Social Action in Cambodia Fundraiser
Five years ago, Carlos Silveira, an art education professor CSULB developed a program called Art and
Social Action in Cambodia, a social justice art course that takes place in Phnom Penh in the month of
January. For three weeks, he and his students design and implement art programs among HIV positive
youth and children rescued from sex trafficking and child labor. These projects have two main purposes:
the development of critical consciousness among the children and the healing or therapeutic aspect that
art provides since a significant part of the youth suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.
For these five past years, the project has been transformative both for the Cambodian children and the
students. Two years ago, Professor Silveira, decided to establish sustainable projects in Cambodia by
hiring "artists in residence" so the children would continue to benefit from the program throughout the
year without interruption.
Professor Silveira started a nonprofit organization, called Arts for Global Citizenship, through which
he holds fundraisers to help pay the salaries of these artists in Cambodia. Please support this extremely
worthwhile endeavor by attending the fundraiser which includes the artwork of faculty and graduate
students from the CSULB art department.
